The Degree of Mark Master,is the Fourth in the Masonic series .
It is historically considered to be of the utmost importance.
It is claimed by Masonic writers, that this Degree in Masonry was instituted by King Solomon himself at the building of the Temple, . Each operative craftsman was required to put his mark upon the product of his labour. These distinctive marks were all known to the Senior Grand Warden. If any of the workman-ship was found to be defective, it was a matter of no difficulty for the overseers to ascertain at once who the imperfect craftsman was, and remedy the defect. Thus the faulty workman was identified, without diminishing the wages of the diligent and faithful craftsmen.
A candidate upon whom this Degree has been conferred is said to have been
"Advanced to the Honourable Degree of a Mark Master Mason"
